Nyiragongo volcano is one of the iconic attractions in the Virunga National Park and has a record of about 40 eruptions. Rising at an altitude of 3470 meters, Mount Nyiragongo is accessible 17 km off from Goma town. This spectacular volcano is found in the Virunga National Park, Eastern Congo and its summits, there is a powerful Lava Lake with diameter measuring 2 km. Mount Nyiragongo forms part of the chain Virunga Massifs and others include Karisimbi, Bisoke, Mikeno, Gahinga, Muhabura, Nyamuragira, and Sabyinyo.
Detailed Itinerary
You will meet one of our experienced Congo guides for pick up and transfer to Kitabi Ranger Post. The Virunga National Park official will brief you early in the morning before you set off on a hike to the summits of Nyiragongo Volcano 3470 meters. At 10:30 am, be prepared for your trek to top of this volcano will take you about 5 to 6 hours and ensure that you on comfortable waterproof hiking/walking boots. Lying in Eastern D.R. Congo, the Nyiragongo is one of the world’s most active volcanoes and at night right at the summit shelters, you will have a clear view of its bubbling Crater Lake. Enough time will spent taking photos and guide will be explaining every bit about this violent volcano.
After a leisurely breakfast, you will be descending from Crater rim of Nyiragongo Volcano to Kitabi. Leave Kitabi for Goma/ Grande barrier border crossing or Gisenyi border area and drive to Kigali for departure.
