Gorilla Trekking Experience in Rwanda
Rwanda gorilla trekking is possible within Volcanoes National Park, part of the Virunga massif that shelters about 604 of the 1063 mountain gorillas. Presently, a total is 12 habituated gorilla families can be trekked in this beautiful Protected Area while others were set aside for scientific research. The gorilla families are made up of at least one silverback with several adult and sub-adult females, blackbacks, juveniles and gorilla babies. Each of these habituated gorilla families come into contact with travellers for a maximum of one hour per day.
Eight gorilla permits are availed for each gorilla family, meaning encounters are always intimate and uninterrupted thus only 96 permits are issued each day for Rwanda Gorilla Trekking. Intending gorilla trekkers normally converge at Kinigi Park Headquarters at 7:00am and assigned a habituated gorilla family on the actual trekking day and this is according to personal interests, age and physical abilities.
