The 4 days Kahuzi-Biega gorillas and Nyungwe chimpanzee trekking safari is perfect for travellers who are interested in watching and visiting chimpanzees as well as lowland gorillas. Chimpanzees will be trekked in Nyungwe forest national park in south-western Rwanda while the Eastern lowland gorillas are hosted in Kahuzi-Biega national park while on the gorilla trekking experience.

Another great activity will be Kigali city tour where you will be able to visit areas like the local markets, walk around the genocide memorial grounds and but are museum and much more, take a canopy walk in Nyungwe forest where you will be able to spot unique birds and primates species like the colobus monkeys, baboons and Vervet monkeys.

Detailed Itinerary

Day One Pick up from Kigali and Transfer to Nyungwe National Park. Afternoon Canopy Walk

Head to the Nyungwe forest national park a journey that will take about 5 hours’ drive and this will be rewarding since you will be passing through the country side that is dotted with stunning landscapes of hills, plantations and valleys. After lunch at around 2:00pm, the driver guide will take you to the park offices where you will start the canopy walk from, which is a suspended bridge of 200m long and 9 meters high. This will reward you with a view of the forest from above as primates keep jumping side to side. In the evening, you will head back to the lodge where you will spend a night.

Day two Morning Chimpanzee Trekking and Transfer to D.R.Congo

Head into the forest with the help of a park ranger guide and all this will begin with briefing after breakfast. The park ranger guide will explain the dos and don’ts which are the precautions that will help you while on the walk in the forest. The park guide will take you to the forest to start the trek and this will reward you with the best experience and this will be at the moment when you meet the Chimpanzees in a group commonly called a troop. The troop members will be playing jumping, moving or even breast feeding and all these moments will be recorded with videos and photos. An hour will be spent while in the presence and after you will transfer to D.R. Congo, a journey that will take about 2 hours’ drive. Arrive in Bukavu and head to your lodge for dinner and night stay.

Day Three Lowland Gorilla Trekking Tour in Kahuzi-Biega National Park

Head for briefing that is very important while carrying out a gorilla trekking experience. This exercise covers aspects like the historical background of the park, the dos and don’ts to follow while trekking endangered lowland gorillas. The trek begins and you will be starting the walk through the forest where you will encounter while exploring different attractions like olive baboons, colobus monkeys, red tailed monkeys and many more with different bird species. Upon locating lowland gorillas, you will have valuable time watching them play, move, feed and this will create everlasting memories as you take photos.

Day Four Drive Back to Kigali from Bukavu and Departure

Have a tasty breakfast and cross back to Rwanda. The journey will take about 6 to 7 hours’ drive, through the towns of Kamembe, Butare and Huye. You may also take an optional activity in Kigali city depending on your time of departure. Visit places like former presidential Palace museum, local markets and museums. You will after be dropped at the airport to mark the end of your 4 days Kahuzi-Biega gorilla trek and Nyungwe chimpanzee safari.
