Murchison Falls National Park previously known as Kabalega National Park first which was first gazetted in 1927 is located at the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley part of Uganda covering 3,480 sq km and is the largest national park of Uganda. Murchison Falls Conservation Area (MFCA) encompasses of Murchison Falls National Park, Bugungu and Karuma Falls Wildlife reserves.
The park is split in half by the Victoria Nile. At the Murchison Falls, the Nile River falls over the edge of the Western Rift valley and forms the spectacular Murchison falls as it dashes through a narrow crevice before it falls about 40 meters forming a beautiful rainbow. The river banks host crocodiles, waterbucks, hippos and buffalos.
The park has 556 birds species recorded, 144 mammals, 51 reptiles and 51 Amphibians. It has all the African Big Five (Lion, over 900 African Elephant, Leopard, over 10,000 Buffalo and Giraffe), Hartbeests, Oribi, countless Antelope, Hippos, waterbucks, more than 35,000 Uganda Kobs and chimpanzees. Vegetation is characterized by Savannah and woodland.
The park can easily be accessed easily by road and air. It is about 4hrs30mins via Kampala – Masindi route (282 km) and or 5hrs30mins via Kampala-Hoima route. Charter flights are available from Kajjansi Airstrip to Chobe airstrip. Park entry fees for the tourist and vehicles can be paid at the park or through your chosen tour operator.
Game drives take place early in the morning and a tourist is able to see plenty of game. At Nyamsika Cliffs is where one can enjoy a picnic, the view and gaze at elephants and other wildlife on the green grassy hillsides and river below. Game drives are exquisite when accompanied by a tour guide.
Tourists get to explore the wild on foot while in Murchison Falls Conservation area. There is a trail at Paraa winds throughout low hills, gullies and forest around the river. One can view birds, animals and plants closely. Nature walks happen at top of the falls, Kaniyo Pabidi and Rabongo Forest.
Bird Species commonly seen between Paraa Rest Camp and Ferry crossing are; Spotted Mourning Thrush, Vitelline Masked Weaver, Silver Bird, Bluff-bellied Warbler, Blue-napped Mousebird, Chestnut-crowned Sparrow-weaver, Black-headed Gonolek, Green-winged Ptyilia, and Black-headed Batis, this is the best site for the localized White-rumped Seed-eater.
