Tour Overview
The 8 Days Rwanda – Congo safari takes you to visit the gorillas, wildlife and hike Nyiragongo the active mountain among the 8 Virunga Mountains. Gorilla trekking for both mountain and low land gorillas won’t be missed, game drives and boat cruise in Akagera national park offering you a chance to spot the big five and rare bird species. Also, the tour offers a chance to visit the notable places in Kigali city such as the Genocide memorial grounds, local markets, art and gallery centers and many more. Gorilla trekking allows you to spend an hour in the presence of the trekked gorilla family and gorillas share 98% of blood DNA and this makes them the human close relatives.
Detailed Itinerary
Be welcomed by the assigned driver guide of our company and have a short city tour in Kigali Rwanda where places like the genocide memorial grounds, the museum, milk bars if you like taking milk and many more others. Head to the hotel for your accommodation.
Transfer to Akagera national park the only savanna protected national park in Rwanda hosting the big five including be rare bird species like the shoebill stork. On the arrival, you will take a boat cruise on Lake Ihema where you will encounter crocodiles and hippos plus other bird species. The game drive will last for 2 hours.
Have a morning game drive to watch over the early raisers such as the lions, leopards, cheetahs, hey as and many more. Like the boat cruise will take about 2 hours but a lot will be spotted including the masai giraffes, buffalos, warthogs, shoebill stork and many more. After head to Volcanoes national park a home of the endangered mountain gorillas located in the Virunga mountain ranges. The overall journey takes about 5 hours but of great adventure as you will enjoy the best of tea plantation and forests. Check in the accommodation with a welcoming glass of juice.
Head to the park offices for briefing and this will include the dos and fonts to follow while in the forest such as don’t feed wildlife, don’t make noise, keep a distance of about 8 meters from the gorilla family, don’t chase or scare wild animals and many more others. Begin the search with a help of the park guide and on meeting a gorilla family, spend an hour with them having a moments to capture photos. The overall experience can take about 4 to 8 hours while in the jungle. You will return to the lodge for lunch and checking out for a transfer to Bukavu-DR Congo for Kahuzi-Biega national park. This is a home to the western low land gorillas.
Like the previous day, begin the day with breakfast and then head for briefing at the park offices with fellow trekkers. This time, you will find the gorillas in the lowland areas not in the mountains like the previous day. Meet the gorilla family and spend an hour in their presence as you will discover the different between the mountain gorillas and these lowland gorillas. After trekking these species of the gorillas, you will head back to the lodge for leisure.
Leave Kahuzi-Biega national park and head to Virunga national park a protected area known to be a historical area with two active mountains that is Mt Nyiragongo and Mt Nyamuragira. Also, it’s a home to the endangered mountain gorillas. This park is part of the Virunga Mountains and on arrival, you will have a chance to visit Goma town.
The hike will begin after breakfast and briefing which will involve passing through the montane forest, Mt Nyiragongo is one of the active mountains in DR Congo and Africa at large with a hike taking about 4 to 6 Hours to reach the summit. Meet different primates on the hike such as red tailed monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, if you’re lucky enough, meet the mountain gorillas as the birds will be singing all day. The summit offers a great scenery of the boiling magma lake. The night will be spent at the base camp.
Descend after breakfast and transfer to Kigali international Airport for your flight back home and this will be the end of the 8 days Rwanda-Congo safari.
