Tour Overview
The 4-day tour takes you to the oldest National Park in Africa – Virunga National Park to explore its natural wonders. This remarkable Mikeno Mist package is perfectly crafted for all adventure seekers who would like to get up close with the mountain gorillas in the wild and trek to the top of Mount Nyiragongo (3470m). Virunga is Africa’s oldest park, created in 1925 with a vast land area of up to 7800sq.km. It is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site, also boasting of its biodiversity inhabiting an estimate of 200 mammal species and these include the endangered mountain gorillas.
Detailed Itinerary
Pick up at Goma border (the Rwanda-Congo border crossing) and you will be transferred to Virunga tourism office. Register and later, you will be provided with gorilla and Nyiragongo hiking permits. Exit the tourism offices and transfer to your comfortable lodge to enjoy a leisurely lunch. You may have a long afternoon chilling at the lodge or embark on the evening guided nature walk. The short nature walk will have you exposed to Virunga National Park birds, flora and other faunal species.
Set off for the morning briefing about gorilla trekking and be equipped with right footwear, long-sleeved shirts, trousers, and don’t forget to carry some snacks, and bottled drinking water. The Virunga National Park official will allocate each group of 8 trekkers one experienced and armed park ranger guide and one habituated gorilla family. The eight Virunga National Park gorilla families: Lulengo, Nyakamwe group, Humba, Bageni, Mapuwa, Rugendo, Kabirizi and Munyanga gorilla groups. A maximum of one hour will be spent face-to-face with a gorilla family upon locating it. After observing mountain gorilla behaviors, return to the lodge for relaxation and enjoy some refreshments at leisure. In the afternoon, leave Mikeno for Senkwekwe Center to visit gorillas under rehabilitation at this orphanage centre.
A leisurely breakfast will be enjoyed early in the morning and after, meet with your driver guide for transfer to Nyiragongo Volcano. Mt. Nyiragongo is a powerful volcano, rising at an altitude of 3470m and today, you will start your hike to its summits after briefing at Kitabi Ranger Post. You will have an overnight stay at the summits while viewing the glowing crater at night.
Breakfast will be served to you at the summit shelters, and after, begin hiking back to Kitabi ranger post. At Kibati, meet the professional driver guide to take you to Goma border crossing and today marks the end of 4-days expedition in Virunga National Park.
