Spend a week exploring the thrilling Rwanda while hitting some of the country’s top highlights. The 7 days Thrilling Rwanda safari begins in Kigali, this beautiful country’s vibrant capital and largest city. Afterwards, you will spend time with the big five game of Akagera National Park. Best, you will be at Kigali City for the night before continuing to Nyungwe Forest National Park where you will trek the chimpanzees in their natural habitat and enjoy the canopy walk. Eventually, you will arrive at the country’s most popular safari destination – Volcanoes National Park where endangered mountain gorillas will be trekked in the company of an armed ranger guide.
After the fantastic breakfast at the Hotel in Kigali, you will continue to Eastern Rwanda, to make a stop at Akagera National Park for its sweeping savannah plains. This is one of the shortest road transfers to a National Park (2 hours) with beautiful views of the countryside and rolling hills before being introduced to the savannah-dominated Protected Area. This Park is where the big five game are found. From the Park entrance, you will start seeing warthogs, bushbucks, Topis, Defassa waterbucks, giant elands, lions and so much more. The afternoon will be spent traversing Lake Ihema shores and calm waters on a boat ride. For this 2-hour adventure, lots of Hippos, crocodiles and birds like pink-backed and great white pelicans, African fish eagles, Kingfishers and others will be sighted. A bonfire and evening cultural performance await you at the lodge, followed by overnight stay.
This day’s adventure leads you to the wildlife-rich areas of Akagera National Park for a game drive. You will first have to fuel your energy with breakfast at the Lodge before boarding the open safari vehicle and traversing the sweeping savannah plains for the lions, spotted hyenas, Defassa waterbucks, Olive baboons, leopards, Topis, duikers, giant elands, Masai giraffes, Oribis, impalas and Kobs among others. Marvel at the sweeping landscapes while being provided exciting information about the ecosystems and species by a Park Ranger. Lunch at the Lodge and in the afternoon embark for a drive to Kigali City.
Leave Rwanda’s Capital behind as you travel by road to Nyungwe Forest National Park- largest Afro-montane forest in the African Continent. One of the richest biodiversity places in the country, Nyungwe Forest National Park draws in nature enthusiasts from across the World who visit for its 80 mammal species that include chimpanzees, over 320 bird species and reptiles among others. While on this journey, make a stop at Butare Museum as well as the Palace Museum in Nyanza. Late afternoon, you will arrive at your accommodation facility and relish the free evening.
Spend the next hours in Nyungwe Forest and this day begins with breakfast at the Safari Lodge, followed by briefing at the Visitor Center. You will be searching for the Great Apes on foot through varying vegetation types and relishing the opportunity of seeing other flora and fauna. Each trek is different because several animals and birds are sighted along the way. Take between one and four hours searching for these endangered primates and once found, you will have only one hour of watching and photographing them in their natural environments. The afternoon is equally exciting as you will be undertaking the canopy walk where more primates, birds and unique tree species are encountered while walking along the 160-meter suspension bridge. The perfect antidote for this adventurous day is a delicious meal served at the Lodge and overnight.
Enjoy the sunrise over Nyungwe Forest and pack your bags for the scenic drive to Lake Kivu. This journey comes with jaw-dropping views along the way and on arriving and checking in, you will spend the remainder of the day exploring its shores. Lake Kivu normally draws Holiday seekers looking to escape the hustles and bustles of Kigali City or relaxation after a hectic gorilla or chimpanzee trek. For the afternoon, you will spend some time traversing the local community while trying out some local dishes, unwinding on the white sandy beaches and surprisingly relishing a slower pace of life.
What a lovely day it is! Enjoy breakfast at the Resort and later a private transfer to the lake for the boat ride to the coffee island to learn about the exciting process of growing, picking, drying, roasting and grinding coffee beans until being served in all kinds (Cappuccino or espresso). After the boat ride, you will re-visit your Resort for lunch and continue for the journey to Volcanoes National Park in the Northern Province of Rwanda.
Enjoy breakfast and private transfer to the Park Headquarters in Kinigi. Here, briefing will be provided by the team of experienced Park Rangers on the different ways of conducting yourself when walking through the forest and spending time in the presence of the mountain gorillas. This is done for protection of both visitors and mountain gorillas. After briefing, continue to a trailhead at the ranger station by vehicle and later join an armed Ranger and expert guide to follow mountain gorilla trails and find the allocated gorilla family. One hour is provided to watch and take photographs of mountain gorillas while foraging, playing, resting and cuddling. Savor a hearty lunch and take a private drive back to Kigali City.
