On the first day, have breakfast and be picked up early and bright for the road trip to the Southern Province, home to Nyungwe Forest National Park. Along the way, be treated to magnificent views of the rolling hills and remote countryside for the 5 hours on the road. Be sure to stop at the Palace Museum in Nyanza to learn about the ancient Kingdoms of Rwanda before they were abolished by Colonialists as well as the famous Inyambo cows that represent Royalty and elegance. From here, you will visit the Ethnographic Museum in Butare and later continue with the journey. Once you arrive the beautiful Nyungwe Forest National Park, you will be treated to a welcome by the chirping birds and playful monkeys as you connect to the Lodge for dinner and overnight.
Having enjoyed your breakfast at the safari lodge, you will walk or be driven to the visitor center for briefing on the rules and regulations to be followed while trekking the beautiful Great Apes in their natural environment. While trekking for the chimpanzees, also look-out for the other primate species, birds and other natural features before eventually making way to the allocated chimpanzee community. One hour is the time provided to visitors to observe their human-like features while photographing them. A picnic lunch is enjoyed in the heart of the jungles and later you’ll continue the day with a guided birding tour through one of the 15 hiking trails. Make stops when you hear sounds of specific birds as identified by the guide and in the evening, you will arrive your Safari Lodge for dinner and rest.
Have another full day in Nyungwe Forest National Park, the crown jewel of southern Province. On this day, you will again get lost in the jungles through tracking the Angolan colobus monkeys in their natural habitat. Transverse through beautiful places while identifying different primate troops while learning about their specific characteristics. The day doesn’t end there as a picnic lunch will only refuel you for another life-changing adventure that you can’t afford to miss. The canopy walk starts at 2:00pm and goes through the deep ravines, tree canopies and open areas for over 160 meters long. Don’t miss out different bird species, primates and outstanding tree species while on this walk and after getting a fill of the jungles, you will spend a quiet night and dinner at the Safari Lodge.
Start the day bright and have breakfast at the lodge overlooking the foggy Nyungwe forest before bidding farewell to Nyungwe Forest National Park, embark on a transfer back to Kigali to catch your homebound flight. Hope to see you again!
