White water rafting in Uganda starts on the flat water just a few kilometers downstream of the Bujagali Dam where tourists will be taken through comprehensive safety training. Rafting is a 19km journey down the powerful White Nile and takes about three to four hours. A tourist can choose grade three or five with a minimum age of 14yrs or 16yrs respectively. The minimum number of rafters is 2 or 4. The raft starts with jaws, pyramid and giggity giggitty a section of grade two white water to train you up and get you ready.
As you approach the first major rapid of the day; Overtime grade 5 you’ll be feeling like a professional. Right after Overtime comes the choice between the grade 4 plus Chop Suey and grade 4 Retrospect, (water level dependent) then comes some flat water and a chance to relax before Bubugo (Grade 3/4) which though small to the eye often flips rafts over. After Bubugo there are some light refreshments during a short flat before the fantastic Itanda Falls.
Itanda is a compulsory portage, being too much dangerous to commercially raft, however you will be lead to the bottom third of the rapid known as the ‘Bad Place. After Itanda there is a great little wave called ‗Itanda Hole‘ the best place to learn how to surf and water rafting guides will introduce you to river-boarding here with some time to get the hang of it and feel like you‘re flying through the water. A grade 4, two-tier rapid called Vengeance will finish the day; this offers a flip for those who will challenge themselves to hit the biggest waves.
